Preserving History at Sweetwater Cabin
Nestled in the heart of Juniper Prairie Wilderness, Sweetwater Cabin, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, has undergone significant restoration to preserve its historical charm and structural integrity.
We began by addressing extensive water damage and erosion, replacing the main support beam and footer, and rebuilding the observation deck, bench, and railings with pressure-treated lumber. This ensures the deck’s durability and safety for years to come.
The stone steps were meticulously rebuilt by a local stonemason, preserving their historical authenticity while enhancing stability. We repaired extensive rot on the cabin’s rear wall and porch, adding necessary support to ensure long-term durability.
In coordination with a Forest Service archeologist, we replaced the existing railing with a historically accurate, custom-built one, maintaining the cabin’s period charm.
These efforts underscore our commitment to preserving Sweetwater Cabin. We invite everyone to enjoy this beautifully restored piece of history in the Ocala National Forest.
