Update on Boardwalk Closures: Alexander Springs and Juniper Springs
AUGUST 2024: The boardwalk closures by the US Forest Service at Alexander Springs and Juniper Springs have been a focal point of visitor interest, and while we understand the anticipation for their reopening, several complex issues have caused delays. Here’s what’s been happening and why these beloved trails remain closed.
What’s the Hold-Up?
Visitor Safety and Conservation
Ensuring visitor safety is the top priority for both the US Forest Service and Naventure, the operator of the campground and recreation areas in which these boardwalks are located. At Juniper Springs, underground hydrological changes have compromised parts of the trail, necessitating additional engineering solutions. Meanwhile, at Alexander Springs, the discovery of significant cultural artifacts in the marsh area has required careful conservation efforts. Environmental factors at both locations, such as shifting water levels and fragile ecosystems, have also contributed to the extended timeline.
Our Commitment to You
Despite the delays with these boardwalk projects, we’ve been actively improving other areas throughout the Ocala National Forest. Through our partnership with the US Forest Service, we have been able to invest $1.6 million in various infrastructure projects that are essential for maintaining the forest’s health and enhancing your visitor experience. Some of these improvements are already visible, while others are happening behind the scenes.
What You Can Enjoy Now
While the boardwalks are temporarily closed, there’s still plenty to enjoy. You can swim in the natural springs, enjoy a picnic, fish, kayak the Juniper Run, and explore the diverse wildlife. These activities continue to make the Ocala National Forest a cherished destination, even during the closures.
Stay in the Loop
We understand that progress on the boardwalks isn’t always visible, but please rest assured that work is underway. We appreciate your patience as we navigate these challenges. Please check back for updates, new developments and the anticipated timelines for reopening.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
